Back to Schools

In the UK, schools account for over 50% of carbon emissions by local authorities. So for our 40:20 campaign here in Haringey, the Council wants schools to cut their carbon emissions by 50% by 2015 – a very ambitious target.

Schools have big budgets for energy – £100k a year for a secondary school, and £30k a year for a primary. Saving energy saves money. So installing cost-effective energy saving measures, means we save both carbon and money.

The Council has a Schools Sustainable Investment Fund. This gives zero-interest loans to schools to install efficiency measures. The savings on energy bills then repay the loan. This funding is for insulation, radiator controls, lighting controls, new boilers etc.

But schools have to know what measures would work for them. And they don’t have the time to find out.

This is where en10ergy steps in. We’re offering free energy audits to six primary schools in Tottenham this autumn. Once the audit explains what they need, we will help them apply for Council funding. We will also help appoint a project manager. This makes energy saving easy.

From what we learn on this project, we will help other schools in Haringey reach their carbon reduction targets. So there’s a lot to do. If you are a parent, governor, teacher or student in a local school, do get in touch if you would like to help.
