What we eat affects the environment; from how our farming practices affect the soil, to the carbon emissions involved in producing the fertilizers, to the energy used to package and to transport the food to our tables. Each of us can contribute if we choose to the solution but we face some quite contradictory choices; do we eat only local food and threaten the livelihoods of African farmers, do we eat only organic and pay through the nose, do we eat supermarket food and support the industrialised food production systems that are depleting our soil quality and adding to the nation’s carbon footprint?
The pages under this food heading; Food Miles, Grow Your Own, Supermarkets, The Organic Argument and the Red Meat Argument, have articles and links addressing these and other questions of sustainability regarding food and its manufacture, packaging and transport.
