Wrinkled veg and half-eaten humous

July 10, 2014 By Cara Jenkinson Leave a Comment

Emma Barnett from Love Food Hate Waste came to talk to us on 7th July.  She started off with some scary facts:  In the UK we throw away enough food, from our homes, to fill Wembley Stadium to the brim nine times over – every year’; ‘Wasting food costs the average family £480 a year. For families with children the cost can be up to £690 a year’ and ‘Food waste gives off harmful … [Read more...]

Sign our petition this weekend!

June 29, 2012 By Cara Jenkinson Leave a Comment

Our first stall was a great success despite the torrential rain shower!  We got 175 signatures on our petition to cut excess packaging by supermarkets and restaurant chains.  The plan is to take this to local supermarket and restaurant managers as well as forwarding to our local MP Lynne Featherstone.  We'll be at O'Neills on Muswell Hill Broadway again on Saturday 14th and … [Read more...]

MHSG launches Packaging Campaign

June 12, 2012 By Cara Jenkinson Leave a Comment

Irritated by triple wrapped foods and toys?  Multi-compartmented plastic trays that weigh more than the food in them, masquerading under descriptions such as ‘lunchbox’ or ‘snack pack’? Huge cardboard boxes for small items from Amazon? The carbon footprint of unnecessary packaging is still a huge issue and although recycling rates are better than they were recycling itself … [Read more...]

Recycle those bins!

MHSG member Ruth Edwards is an expert on recycling.  But she was baffled by the surplus of green bins, made redundant by the Council’s introduction of green wheelies.  It was unclear whether a plastic bin was suitable for co-mingled recycling and anyway she didn’t want to part with an old friend.  Suddenly she had an Archimedes moment: use it to grow this year’s crop of … [Read more...]

MHSG supports Haringey Council’s move to fortnightly waste collections

February 19, 2012 By Jeremy 1 Comment

There's a lot of griping about the council's move to fortnightly collections. Some people just don't like change, and others will do anything for the environment short of...well, actually doing something. Local Friends of the Earth groups have issued a statement in support of the move, which says: "We welcome the Council’s move to introduce fortnightly collections for … [Read more...]

Reducing food waste on the Broadway

February 14, 2012 By Cara Jenkinson 1 Comment

According to WRAP, the waste action group, , 5.3m tonnes of still-edible food is thrown away each year.  The Best Before project www.bestbefore.org.uk  has the desperately sensible mission of redistributing unsold food from retailers which is past its Best Before date, to those who will benefit from it such as soup kitchens and community groups. As they put it Our plan against … [Read more...]
