Green Open Homes 2021 – a record-breaker!

This year’s Green Open Homes scored the biggest ever number of face-to-face and online visits to homes and advice events.  Offering a wide choice of green technologies to view and expert advice to access, with over 140 bookings (nearly 50% up on 2020), showing that Muswell Hill people really do want low-carbon homes which are also economic to run and comfortable to live in.

Homes open for live visits included an Edwardian house built in the age of coal, now insulated and heated with the climate in mind, a ‘deep-retrofitted’ 1920s semi and a 1980s timber-framed bungalow.

Visits to an upstairs flat revealed how energy-cutting solutions can be employed in a converted older property, while the unique timber and cob Eco-building at Meadow Orchard showed how to build green from scratch.

Online tours offered insights into installing rainwater harvesting and green roofs, and how to make the most of solar energy in a home in a former commercial property.

The season included online events offering expert advice from MHSG’s Dermot Barnes on deep retrofit, and the Ecofurb and Future Fit Homes projects, and looking at how both tenants and landlords in the private rented sector can take energy-saving action.
